NORDHOFF IN THE NEWS
![]() Ojai Valley News photo by Ken Brown Nordhoff Senior Courtney Haapanen forces out a runner in a game earlier this season. Nordhoff Riding Five-Game Win Streak Towards Title Mike Miller, Ojai Valley News sports editor After a rough start to the season, the Nordhoff High School (NHS) softball team is dialed in as it enters the stretch run of the 2018 season. The Lady Rangers have won five straight and are expected to be in the mix for the Frontier League championship. “We won our first league title back in 2010 and then we won another in 2013. It would be great to get another banner this year and I think we can do it if we keep playing the way we are,” said head coach Don Rodarte. Read More Byle Earns Rotary Student Honors The Rotary Club of Ojai West Student of the Month award for April was given April 24 to Noahm Byle (middle), a senior at Nordhoff High School (NHS). Byle was nominated for the award by Bill Wagner, director of music at NHS. Wagner described Byle as a young man of the highest character; one of those students who comes through his department every few years who raises the quality of the student efforts in the department. Byle is a drummer in jazz band, percussion section leader in the symphonic band, and was captain of the front ensemble for marching band. He was active in choir and the spring musicals, most recently starring as Caldwell B. Cladwell in “Urinetown, The Musical” last month. He also plays piano in his family band, Celtic Nut. Also present at the presentation were his mother, Carly Byle (right) and father, Eilam Byle. He plans to continue his education in junior college and then transfer to a four-year college. His interests are the sciences and music. Nordhoff High School (NHS) junior Kaylie Turner was recently named the Rotary Club of Ojai’s Physical Education Student of the Month. Turner was given a check for $200 and a certificate at the April 20 Rotary Club meeting. Turner was accompanied by her mother and NHS track and field coach Dave Settem. Read More More Unity and Chemistry Driving NHS Tennis Success Mike Miller, Ojai Valley News sports editor Nordhoff High School (NHS) boys’ tennis coach Todd Dickey is excited about this year’s team and for good reason. Through its first two matches this season, the Rangers are undefeated. NHS topped Oxnard, 16-2, and then came back and dominated Channel Islands by the same score a day later. “This is the deepest team I have had since 2011 and that year we won the league title,” said Dickey. “We have lots of great leadership and I think our biggest strength is that our kids have been playing together for a number of years. They know each other and trust each other.” Most of the players in the NHS program came up playing World Team Tennis and Junior Team Tennis through the Ojai Recreation Department and that has laid a solid foundation for high school success noted Dickey. The Rangers have been led by seniors Victor Becker and Mikel Elizalde, who are serving as co-captains for the team this spring. A trio of sophomores in Shawn Rothermel, Elias Simon and Dakota Martin are emerging as major contributors for the Rangers. Nordhoff Ranger
